Exclusive: Media personality Erin Molan can now add fashion designer to her name, with her new range of baby clothes picked up by a national retailer.
The radio host’s apparel, called Berry Basics by Erin, will appear in Best & Less stores, two years after the radio host first tapped into design.
She discovered a niche market for baby singlets that didn’t have to be put on over the child’s head, after she struggled to dress her daughter Eliza as a newborn.
From her kitchen table, the range grew — and now includes vests, nappy covers, bodysuits, PJ sets and blankets.
“The baby singlet became this kind of thing that gained momentum and while I have absolutely no strength in fashion, it was a passion project and something that made our life so much easier during a really hard time,” she said.
“The singlet design is world-first and the design is so simple, but the fact that I'm the one who has come up with it baffles me as much as it will probably baffle anyone else.
“I went and spent a lot of money and a lot of resources in protecting the design and I own the design rights in the UK, in the US and in New Zealand as well.”
Molan has been working behind the scenes with Best & Less to expand her Berry Basics by Erin line — beyond the original singlet.
“Erin approached us initially when she came up with her baby singlet invention and as a customer we have had a relationship with her over a number of years,” Head of marketing for Best & Less, Janine Van Deventer, said.
“Being a mum herself, Erin relates really well to other mums and understands that it’s all the little details that can make a big difference.
“After the initial independent launch of her baby singlet invention, Erin realised she needed a partner that was a specialist in baby apparel and could expand the idea as well as reach a wider audience.”
The latest venture, which lands in stories on November 17, follows the launch this week of Molan’s new documentary Haters Online: Erin Molan Fights Back, looking at the vicious online trolling she copped during her time on The NRL Footy Show.
Molan, 40, said she was learning to “enjoy” her side project in between her demanding on-air commitments and raising a young child.
“I certainly have no expectations in terms of where it will take me and I guess I’m really lucky in that I earn a living elsewhere,” Molan said.
“The baby market is saturated, but this range will make life easier for parents and that’s what will make it stand out.
“For now this is my hobby, but who knows where this will take me.”
The Berry Basics by Erin range is launching November 17 – in Best & Less stores and online.
