Supermarkets are on a hiring spree in the lead up to the holiday period, advertising casual roles nationwide which could be the perfect opportunity to earn some extra cash.

The major supermarkets have started advertising for a wide range of roles across their metro and regional stores.

According to the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA), the Coles agreement level one employees at the supermarket will earn $23.90 per hour, with a minimum of 25 per cent in casual loading.

Workers on level one can be a store team member, cleaner or personal shopper.

Similarly, the SDA Woolworths agreement has level one employees earning $21.05 per hour, the casual loading pushes that up to $26.26 per hour.

The Coles Group also launched a new job site as they struggle with the current labour market.

“We are currently hiring for more than 10,700 vacancies nationally across our supermarkets, Liquor and Express networks, particularly in our regional and remote locations such as North WA and North Queensland. There are a variety of opportunities available, incusing baker, delivery driver and team member positions,” a Coles spokesperson said.

“The Australian labour market conditions and record low unemployment rates have presented challenges with attracting and hiring talent for our opportunities, particularly for our store leadership, baker and driver positions, as well as our regional and remote locations.”

Woolworths currently has 2916 vacancies for all roles.

A spokesman said more jobs vacancies and hours are to be expected across the busiest time of the year.

“We’re always hiring new team members to support our stores, particularly in the lead up to Christmas. Of course, that sits alongside the additional hours we offer our existing team members,” he said.

The average retail assistant role at Aldi is advertised to earn approximately $27.66 per hour not including additional penalties, with the retailer currently looking to fill 282 part-time jobs.

A spokesperson for Aldi said: “It remains a tight job market and we continue to recruit, all jobs are available at aldicareers.com.au.”

The rush to recruit for Christmas casuals comes as Australia Post announced a hiring blitz to ensure Christmas deliveries arrive on time, advertising a total of 6000 mixed roles.

This week there are 2194 Christmas casual positions alone advertised across the country, with companies such as Myer and JB HI-FI mass-hiring across multiple locations.
