Shoppers have been left shocked after receiving an unexpected “surprise” from Coles in their mailbox.

The retailer has quietly been distributing special gifts to customers deemed particularly “loyal” to its FlyBuys program, rewarding them with unexpected presents.

Customers experiencing the burden of living cost hikes have this week begun sharing the fruits of the rollout and have excitedly revealed their prizes online.

“I’m not sure how many of these they sent out but check your mailboxes. I got a random $100 gift card from Coles, which was a lovely surprise,” one enthusiastic FlyBuys member posted to Facebook.

She later revealed just how much she typically spent at the retailer every two weeks.

“I do an online order once a fortnight for about $400. Then I spend about another $100 the next week topping up on fresh veggies, fruit ect,” she revealed.

Others claimed they had similar spending habits but had yet to receive a reward.

“I shop at Coles three to four times a week and have nothing,” one person replied.

“Me too and spend at least $400 a week. Will be interesting to see,” another said.

“Hmm I spend about $400 per week at coles and use my Flybuys card, that’s not including what I also spend at Kmart etc using Flybuys but I didn’t receive a special treat, I’m jealous. Congratulations to everyone else that did though,” a third wrote.

Others shared their excitement at having already received a voucher in the mail.

“I got one too! Was so surprised to not just find bills in my letterbox for a change,” one wrote.

“I got one too - was an absolute surprise as I didn’t know it was a thing but definitely comes in handy,” a third said.

The retail giant announced last week it would be thanking customers throughout the coming weeks with $100 gift cards and 10,000 Flybuys bonus points, which would be emailed then activated when the Flybuys card is scanned.

A one million Flybuys bonus point surprise would also be rewarded to 10 customers – the equivalent of $5,000 Flybuys dollars.

“We are saying thankyou to our loyal Flybuys members for their continuous support to our team, our suppliers and community partners over the years,” Coles Chief Marketing Officer Lisa Ronson said.
