A PROMINENT non-profit group aimed at promoting Brisbane’s liveability has tapped a journalist-turned-businessman to serve as its inaugural chief executive officer.

The Committee For Brisbane revealed today it had hired Barton Green for the job.

Mr Green, who currently acts as an executive director of consultancy Three Plus, is a native of the city and has over three decades’ management experience.

He has also served on the boards of private companies, statutory authorities and not-for-profit organisations.

“I’m passionate about Brisbane and the surrounding regions and I have a positive view about its future,” Mr Green said.

“I’ve spent more than 40 years either as a journalist or communications and strategic consultant to the public and private sectors, including 35 years’ experience working in and around politics.

“I’ll play an active role for the Committee For Brisbane as it continues to provide strong commentary and opinion about how and where our political, business and community leaders should focus their attention to benefit our community.”

He will start in the new role in January while also retaining non-executive chairman’s role at Three Plus.

Committee For Brisbane president Brendan Christou said Mr Green had been selected from a strong field of candidates to lead the long-running organisation, which was formerly known as the Brisbane Development Association.

“For 60 years the Committee For Brisbane has been an influential, apolitical organisation that has provided strong advocacy to create a better greater Brisbane,” Mr Christou said.

“We are about to step up our activity to promote the region and to achieve sustainable economic and lifestyle benefits for businesses and communities, including support for a 2032 Olympics.

“Industry and community development will be at the heart of our activities, with a focus on investment, infrastructure, environment, tourism and cultural development and Barton Green has the skills and experience to lead this work.”

The committee includes some of Brisbane’s top movers and shakers, such as stockbroker Steve Wilson, energy baron Trevor St Baker, stadiums boss Harvey Lister, eco-tourism operator Jude Turner, corporate travel mogul Jamie Pherous and Eddie Scuderi’s team at law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

They raised about $1 million earlier this year to create the CEO’s position.
