Queensland tennis champion Ash Barty and Garry Kissick were married on an exclusive Sunshine Coast island which sets guests back $18,000 a night.

Ash Barty marries long-time partner in secret wedding

Retired tennis star Ash Barty likes to keep things on the down-low – and her marriage to long-time partner Garry Kissick was no exception.

But it can be revealed the mystery location for their nuptials was the exclusive – and fittingly heart-shaped – Makepeace Island on the Noosa River in the Sunshine Coast.

Citybeat phone calls to the Noosa Heads island resort, which you can rent out for more than $18,000 a night, went straight to message bank, with the voice on the other end saying the island was closed for renovations and would reopen in mid-September.

But our sources say they believe the pair were married there in front of family and close friends last month after returning from St Andrews in Scotland, having seen Queenslander Cameron Smith win the British Open.

With a long list of celebrity guests including Justin Bieber and the Hemsworth brothers, the 10ha Makepeace Island is one of Queensland’s most exclusive resorts.

Previously known as Pig Island, Makepeace was named after former resident and colourful local character Hannah “Shotgun” Makepeace.

In 2009, Makepeace Island was developed as a private retreat for family and friends of the owners, Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Australia co-founder Brett Godfrey.

In July 2011 its doors were opened for exclusive use with its three two-bedroom villas, Boathouse and four spacious suites in the Island House able to accommodate up to 22 guests.

In 2018 Radek Sali, chairman and founder of Light Warrior, an investment group that invests in businesses that are socially responsible and environmentally conscious, became the third joint owner.

A year later Queensland richlisters Cathie Reid and Stuart Giles, co-founders of the Icon Cancer Care Group and the Epic Good Foundation joined the Makepeace ownership family.
