“I’m curious to know what your weekly spend on groceries is?”
The cost of living crisis has turned people’s grocery bills into certified small talk. Everyone wants to know how much you are spending to feed yourself – so they can feel better about their own ballooning grocery bills.
According to Finder, the average household spent $187 per week on groceries in November, and 83 per cent of Aussies have joined a supermarket rewards program.
A popular Facebook group post has kicked off a large conversation about grocery spending, with a curious shopper asking if spending $200 weekly on groceries is normal in 2023.
The post outlined that she shops fortnightly and the groceries are just for two adults. She also explained that she compares supermarket prices and uses rewards programs to be savvy, but she was still forking out $200 per week.
“Is that normal? I know the cost of living has gone up, but holy cow,” she asked.
The post scored hundreds of comments, with Aussies revealing just how much they were spending at the grocery store, and the results were mixed.
One woman revealed that while she didn’t like to crunch the numbers because of how much she was spending on food, she spent $400 plus a week on two adults and four kids.
Another shared they were spending $200 a week for just two adults and no kids and she’d noticed a huge rise in her grocery bill.
“We used to spend about $250 a fortnight and now it is pushing $200 a week,” she shared
.
One Aussie shared that their family of four was spending $550 per week on food but did add that the bill included cleaning products.
A mum shared that for her to feed her two sons and herself, it was costing her $300 per week.
One admitted her grocery bill was costing her around $800 to $1000 a week, but didn’t specify how many people she was feeding for that price.
“About $800-$1000. It is out of control, but if I’m honest, I’m not sure because it scares me too much to add up,” she said.
Meanwhile, another shared that it cost $350 to feed herself, her partner and two gorgeous cats.
“I always only buy specials, too,” she added.
One savvy shopper said that she’s got her grocery bill down to $260 fortnightly but she said she was annoyed by the rising costs.
“It doesn’t go as far as it used too! Wish it would go back down,” she complained.
Similarly another shared that she used to spend $60 per week to feed herself and now it was costing her $150.
One theme throughout the post was that Aussies across the board noticed that their grocery shopping was costing them more.
Graham Cooke, head of consumer research at Finder, said that households feel pressure from grocery prices.
“Households are at breaking point, with many changing how and where they shop in order to put food on the table,” he said.
Mr Cooke said a few simple tricks are available that can help Aussies control their food shopping bill.
“Always have a shopping list before heading to the shops as this will prevent you from buying things you don’t need, and shopping towards the end of the day means you are more likely to find discounted items which are still fresh but cost less,” he advised.
Mr Cooke also advised that taking advantage of supermarket reward programs was great and also always remembered to compare supermarket prices.
“One other hack is to download the apps for the big two supermarkets and use them to compare the prices in your local stores,” he said.
