A woman has died after she was stabbed by a man outside a luxury hotel in Darwin on Friday night.
Shortly before 6pm, emergency services were called to a scene near DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on the Esplanade.
In a statement, Northern Territory Police said the woman had entered the hotel seeking help after being stabbed.
She was rushed to the Royal Darwin Hospital where she later died.
Local media reported that a staff member of the hotel remained with the woman until paramedics arrived, and said the woman’s brother attended the scene on Saturday morning with friends.
Police confirmed a man was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.
The woman’s death comes less than a months after 19-year-old Declan Laverty was fatally stabbed while working in a Darwin bottle shop.
In the same week, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton warned someone would die in Alice Springs due to town’s spiralling levels of violence and sexual abuse.
On Saturday afternoon Northern Territory Opposition Leader, Lia Finocchiaro, declared on social media that “real action is needed.”
“While our thoughts and prayers are with their families enough is not enough,” she said.
“This cannot continue. We need real action now.”
According to the ABC, NT Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said her “heart goes out to all those affected last night.”
“We have … legislated an urgent amendment to include a new presumption against bail for violent offences involving a weapon,” she said.
“The presumption against bail extends to co-offenders who participate in violent offences involving a weapon, even if they do not possess the weapon themselves.
“If you are charged with a violent offence involving a weapon, it is expected that you will remanded in prison until your case is determined.“
