A heartbroken mother has shared her pain after her 20-year-old daughter Kassandra Muhr died in a horror boat crash on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Ms Muhr, who was from Germany, has been living in Australia for several years, most recently at a home on Scotland Island, though her mother has revealed she desperately wanted her to come home.

The collision happened shortly before 7pm on Sunday, when two small boats crashed into each other near Elvina Bay at Pittwater.

Ms Muhr’s 19-year-old boyfriend Kobi Bennett was reportedly driving the other boat. They were the only two people involved.

Speaking from her home in Germany, devastated mother Romana Muhr said her daughter only went to Australia for a short holiday, but quickly fell in love with the country and never left.

“She left her soul in Australia, a place she truly loved,” Mrs Muhr told the Daily Telegraph.

“I wasn’t really happy about Kaysy staying in Australia, but she was really happy and she found good friends.

“She always told us to visit her so that she can show us why she fell in love with Australia.”

Just over a week before the crash, Ms Muhr posted on Instagram about fixing the navigation lights on her boat that allow vessels to be seen at night.

Mr Bennet was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious but stable condition after suffering multiple cuts, abrasions and bruises to his face and legs.

Authorities executed a multi-agency operation in response, with two ambulance helicopters, four ambulances, paramedics and police quickly rushing to the crash site in waters off Rocky Point.

Ms Muhr was found unresponsive in one of the boats and could not be revived despite the best efforts of all responders. She died at the scene.

Detective Superintendent Murray Reynolds said the collision was a tragedy.

“It is a tragedy, it’s a horrific set of circumstances,” he said.

“When police arrived a 20-year-old female was found deceased in one of the vessels.

“We’re yet to understand exactly what happened, but potentially the vessels were going in opposite directions.”

NSW Ambulance Inspector Christie Marks said authorities had to navigate trying circumstances due to the location and time of the collision, including a critical care team from the Toll Ambulance helicopter being winched down on a jetty.

“This was a major mobilisation of emergency services in very difficult circumstances – pitch black, across cold water, in a very inaccessible location,” she said.

“Our aeromedical team did really well accessing the patient under the circumstances.

“I’m sorry that there’s been such a tragic outcome in this case.”

Northern Beaches police officers have established a crime scene.

They retrieved two vessels, both described as 5m open runabouts, which will undergo further scientific examination as part of their investigation.

Police said speed, potential alcohol consumption and whether safety equipment was used would all form part of their investigation.

A report will be also prepared for the coroner.
