Queensland Police has put out an urgent call for the public’s assistance in finding a “distraction device” lost during a 10-hour siege in Townsville.
The device was discovered missing during a routine weapons audit of a specialised unit that had been called to the March 12 siege on Elphinstone Drive, Kirwan, to assist.
It works in a similar way to a flash-bang grenade, which is used to disorient people when used.
A QPS spokesman said while the device was not lethal, it did have the capacity to cause injury to a person nearby if handled incorrectly.
“Police have carried out extensive searches this afternoon, which will continue throughout the night, however, have been unable to locate the device,” the said.
“In keeping with the police standards a review will be conducted into the circumstance of the matter.”
Anyone who finds the device is urged to contact police immediately and should not tamper with it.
The siege ended when the gunman took his own life.
