Man charged with attempted murder over Gold Coast stabbing

A man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a stranger in a toilet block on the Gold Coast.

A man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a stranger in a public toilet block on the Gold Coast in Queensland.

The 31-year-old man allegedly stabbed a 43-year-old Surfers Paradise man with a knife from behind in a public toilet on Goodwin Terrace at Burleigh Heads at 5.45am on Monday.

Police allege the attacker, who is believed to be homeless, fled the scene after being confronted by people passing by.

He was later found in Palm Beach and taken into custody at 6.10am.

The victim suffered serious injuries to his head and hands.

He was rushed by paramedics to Gold Coast University hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police and ambulance services were seen crowded around the public toilets near the well known Burleigh Pavilion.

The alleged attack comes after police ended an initiative to locate bladed weapons – including knives, screwdrivers and axes – on the Gold Coast’s night precincts.

The one-year program ended on April 30.

The trial scheme resulted in more than 120 charges being laid against 95 people.

The 31-year-old man is due to face the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
