A man has been charged with grievous bodily harm after allegedly stabbing a teacher in her home in far north Queensland.
The 26-year-old Lockhart River man was arrested on Wednesday after attacking the female victim, 25, at her address in Blady Grass St, Lockhart River on Tuesday night.
Police allege the man approached the woman’s home at 9.30pm asking for medication and water.
After she returned with a glass of water, the man allegedly punched and stabbed the woman, understood to be a teacher at a local school, in her arms, legs, stomach and face.
Her 49-year-old neighbour attempted to intervene before the man allegedly assaulted her too.
The 25-year-old teacher was flown to Cairns Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
She remains in a stable condition.
On Wednesday, the man was charged with grievous bodily harm and common assault.
He was denied bail and will appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on a later date.
Lockhart River Mayor Wayne Butcher has blamed “sly grog” being brought into the dry community, the Courier Mail reports.
“There are too many people in our community with too much time on their hands while the rest of us are working hard to build a future for our families and our children,” he said.
“The teacher concerned had a role to play in that, as most of us do, and those who are bringing in this sly grog are as much to answer for this as the perpetrator.”
