The police officer son of former senator Kristina Keneally has made his first move in court after being charged with fabricating evidence.

The son of former senator Kristina Keneally will fight allegations he fabricated evidence that led to a man’s imprisonment while working as a cop.

Police allege Daniel John Keneally falsely accused a member of the public of threatening to kill a police officer during a phone call to Newtown police station in February last year.

Charges were laid against the man, who spent three weeks before being given a formal apology by the state.

Mr Keneally was charged with fabricating false evidence with the intent to mislead a judicial tribunal after an investigation by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

The 24-year-old police officer did not appear in Sydney Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, where his lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

The court heard the brief of evidence will be served on the defence by December 15.

Mr Keneally’s matter will return to court on January 15.

NSW Police confirmed his employment status is under review.

The 24-year-old is the son of former senator Kristina Keaneally, who held a senate seat from 2018 until April this year.

She served as Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate for three years, from 2019 until 2022 when she lost her seat of Fowler.
