NSW Police have revealed a woman who went missing from Sydney in October last year may still be alive and living in Melbourne.
Kathleen Riethmuller, 28, who is originally from Brisbane, was last seen on October 28 in North Sydney on CCTV footage visiting a Bunnings on Reserve Rd, Artarmon, before walking along a busy road – where she later vanished.
Her backpack containing her ID, bank cards, money and other personal belongings was found later that day by a member of the public on Centennial Ave, Lane Cove.
In a press conference on Monday, Deputy Premier and Minister Police Paul Toole said police believe Ms Riethmuller may have travelled to Melbourne for employment opportunities.
Mr Toole called on the public to help find Ms Riethmuller to ensure she is safe as authorities have not managed to contact her.
“The ripple effect that occurs when a person goes missing for no reason or without a trace should not be underestimated,” he said.
“Police are committed to finding Kathleen to provide answers to her family and those who knew her, but they need the public’s help.”
Police said Ms Riethmuller often frequented a unit on King St in Sydney and backpackers accommodation on Sir John Young Crescent, Woolloomooloo, where she was believed to have checked in on October 28.
But she never went to her room. Instead she left immediately and was believed to have travelled to North Sydney where she was last seen wearing a long sleeve denim dress and black flat shoes.
Friends have launched a social media page dedicated to finding her.
Detective Chief Superintendent Glen Browne, said the woman’s behaviour was “clearly out of character” with no known reason for her sudden disappearance.
“Her behaviour was clearly out of character when she was last seen, and we’ve been unable to establish any logical reason for her movements that day and subsequent disappearance,” he said.
“Ultimately we need the help of the public.”
Between October 20 and October 22, a Sydney-based Gumtree account set up with her name was listed – with various homewares for sale, worth a total of $410.
The items for sale included a yoga mat, a vintage room divider, a lamp, an easel and a framed mosaic picture.
The advert, however, vanished soon after her disappearance along with her profile.
Ms Riethmuller, who is also known by the names of Amy Munroe, Kate Riethmuller, Margret Riethmuller and Kate Muller, is described as caucasian in appearance, with a thinly built frame with long dark hair.
