Freight train engine catches fire near Laidley

Emergency crews have been called to assist after a freight train was reportedly on fire west of Brisbane.

A freight train carrying grain has been stopped after smoke was spotted coming from its engine west of Brisbane.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue spokeswoman told NCA NewsWire initial crews were called to Laidley Rosewood Road, Laidley at about 11.45am on Wednesday.

She said initial reports were a Aurizon operated grain freight train was on fire however once crews arrived “there was just the engine that was smouldering”.

One crew worked on “cooling down” the engine, while another crew remained on standby.

An Aurizon spokeswoman told NCA NewsWire about 2pm the fire had now been contained.

“There was a small fire on an Aurizon loco this morning between Grandchester and Laidley which has quickly been contained and extinguished,” she said.

“There were no injuries to our train crew.

“A replacement loco is currently enroute to remove the locos and wagons from the line.”
