180kg of ice found in fridges sent from Asia

A Sydney man has been charged with drug trafficking offences after 180kg of ice was discovered in fridges sent from Malaysia.

Australia's Growing Drug Crisis

About 180 kilograms of ice found in refrigerators sent to Sydney has been seized, with a NSW man now in custody for his involvement.

The 28-year-old Chipping Norton man was charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) on Thursday after the drugs, worth about $135 million, were discovered by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers in air cargo sent from Malaysia.

He was charged with importing a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs and is due to appear in the Central Local Court at a later date.

An investigation was first launched by the AFP in Melbourne in late 2019. Officers there traced the cargo to the Chipping North address, in Sydney’s southwest, on Wednesday, and the man was arrested.

Following a search of the property, an encrypted phone, alleged fraudulent documents and about $250,000 in cash were seized.

A second NSW address in Chester Hill was also searched and additional items taken for analysis.

AFP Investigations Commander Ray Imbriano said the damage caused by methamphetamine (ice) to individuals and to the wider community could not be overstated.

“We know these drugs form physical and physiological dependency and contribute to domestic violence and violence against paramedics, hospital staff and police,” he said.

“Our work with other agencies to remove dangerous drugs like methamphetamine from Australian streets is protecting the health and wellbeing of our community.

“We are working hard to stay one step ahead of organised crime who profit from the harm this drug causes.”
