EDEN Powell knows exactly how much World War I cost her great-grandfather, Arthur Binning.

Arthur was just 21 when he joined the Australian Infantry Force’s 27th Battalion in 1916 and was sent to the Western Front, only to be shot in the hand and lose it to amputation.

“I’ve never thought about losing a hand, but it must have been hard, especially when he came home to the farm where there’s a lot of work to be done,” Eden, a grade 5 pupil at Perth College, said.

“He must have gone through a lot. It would be hard seeing the things he saw in war. I’m really proud of him.”

Eden is one of Australia’s Anzac kids reflecting proudly on the service of their ancestors ahead of the 100th Anzac Day on April 25.

The stories are being told each day this week to coincide with a collection of 14 commemorative 20c coins.
