Nice attack, day two: Dozens killed and injured in Bastille Day attack

France has begun three days of national mourning as Prime Minister Manuel Valls warned his people to "learn to live with terrorism" after the country suffered its third mass killing in 19 months, reports Latika Bourke from Nice.

The socialist President Francois Hollande visited Nice the day after attack condemned it as an "unspeakable act".

"Why Nice? Because it is a world famous city, one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. Why on the 14th of July? Because it is a celebration of freedom," he said.

As France prepares to wake to another day of mourning, a clearer picture is starting to emerge of what happened on the Promenade des Anglais.

- Thursday, 2pm: Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel parks the truck near the promenade after renting the vehicle three days prior

- Thursday, 10pm: Thousands enjoy the fireworks on the famous promenade as they spill out from cafes, hotels and restaurants

- Thursday, 11pm: As the fireworks reach their peak, the truck starts its course down the promenade, it veers violently to the left and right striking down pedestrians as it continues for more than two kilometres.

- Thursday, 11:03pm: A man on a motorcycle attempts to overtake the truck, he clings to desperately to its side before his scooter is crushed beneath its wheels. He remains in a critical condition.

- Thursday, 11:05pm: The truck comes to a stop as it hits an obstruction. Within five minutes Lahouaiej-Bouhlel's rampage kills at least 84 people and injures hundreds. Police fire on the truck, killing Lahouaiej-Bouhlel. Inside they find a stash of grenades, ammunition and firearms.

The latest nationality count of victims now stands at three Germans, two Estonians, two Americans, one Russian one Armenian, one Ukrainian, one Swiss and one Moroccan.

A 27-year-old Parisian ,Timothy Fournier, died in efforts to save his pregnant wife, along with Robert Marchand, a 60-year old originally from Marcigny in rural eastern France, and senior border police officer Emmanuel Grout, 48, who was watching the fireworks display with his family.

A 21-year-old Russian student was identified late on Friday as another victim of the attack.

Victoria Savchenko was walking in Nice with a friend, Polina, Serebryannikova, 22, after the pair had watched the Bastille Day celebrations, when the truck swerved towards them.

Ms Serebryannikova, who was badly injured but survived the ordeal, told Russian media that Ms Savchenko was killed instantly.

A Swiss woman named Linda Casanova has been confirmed as among the dead by her family.

The 54-year-old customs expert from Agno Ticino, an Italian-speaking region, was confirmed dead by her brother Ivano Casanova.

Francis and Christiane Locatelli, 82 and 78, died alongside their daughter, kindergarten assistant Veronique Lion, 55, and their grandson, 28-year-old economics professor Michael Pellegrini.

Five Australians are among those injured in the attacks in Nice, but our ambassador to France says we've been lucky not to have citizens killed or badly injured.

The Nice attack killed 84 people, including 10 children, but of the Australian victims two are in a satisfactory condition in hospital, another has already been discharged and two others were treated for minor injuries.

Ambassador Stephen Brady says considering the number of Australians who arrive in France through Nice it could have been worse, according to AAP, noting the death toll includes three Germans, two Americans, a Swiss and a Russian.

It's the third time in five weeks that Facebook has been forced to activate its safety check.

It was an overworked waiter, a busy restaurant, a scouts meeting and a last-minute flight delay that mourners gathered at the Promenade des Anglais in Nice were thanking on Friday

As tourists and locals made their way to the promenade to add to the growing number of floral tributes, many recounted their own near-misses, as they absorbed the carnage some had seen and escaped not even 24-hours before.

Fifteen-year-old Ellisiv and her mother and sister were dining at a restaurant and watching the Bastille Day fireworks further up the promenade when 31-year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel began his murderous two-kilometre drive down the seaside path that would kill 84 people and leave 200 injured.

"Luckily our food was an hour late...it was taking some time...we would have been exactly there," Ellisiv told Fairfax Media.

Marine Le Pen, France's Front National leader has heaped pressure on President Francois Hollande to do more than just engage in a "war on words" with Islamic fundamentalism.

Ms Le Pen told Le Figaro: "Nothing that we have proposed has been put in place. Considering the new nature of terrorism which is now a terrorism of opportunity, that's to say without hierarchical structure, the urgency is to attack the ideology on which this terrorism is based."

A note from the US based IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre says that the "Do it Yourself" terrorism employed by Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel is only going to become more common as IS encourages more combatants to stay at home.

"The high-impact/low-capability nature of the attack raises the risk of the repeated use of the tactic in France and allied countries in the coming months," according to the anlaysis by the Centre, which tracks terror groups.

Patrick Johnston, a terrorism analyst at Rand Corp told USA Today: "There's some planning and logistics that go with it, but it's not the most sophisticated attack you'll ever see,"

"This is sort of the next tactical shift."
