Tottenham survive Man Utd comeback to reach League Cup semis

By Reuters

Tottenham Hotspur survived a furious Manchester United comeback to reach the League Cup semi-finals with a 4-3 home victory in a gripping tie on Thursday.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were cruising against a lacklustre United with Dominic Solanke’s double and a goal for Dejan Kulusevski putting them 3-0 up after 54 minutes.

But the home crowd were left chewing their fingernails as two terrible mistakes by their keeper Fraser Forster allowed substitutes Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo to give United hope.

There were still 20 minutes left when Diallo made it 3-2 and United were close to equalising on several occasions before Son Heung-min sealed it in odd fashion, deceiving United keeper Altay Bayindir directly from a corner.

There was still time for Jonny Evans to head a third for United in stoppage time but a relieved Tottenham hung on.

Tottenham are seeking a first trophy since 2008 when they won the League Cup for the fourth time.

Thanks and goodbye

That’ll be it from me this morning. Thanks for following our live coverage. A big morning and even bigger result for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur, inching closer to silverware in the Carabao Cup.

Have a good day.

Ange Postecoglou speaks: “Are you not entertained?”

Yeah, he really just said that to Sky Sports:

Are you not entertained? What do you want? Do you want a scrambling 1-0? I don’t. The studio is probably going to melt down over my lack of tactics.

I love the fact that we go out there and just take it to top teams. Even the fact that we’ve got so many absences at the moment: Goalkeeper, both centre-halves, left-backs. We’ve got kids on the bench and yet these boys are maintaining their principles about trying to play the football we want.

If we get through this period, I just think we’re going to get an enormous growth out of it. I really like the way we played tonight.

Obviously, those two moments [by Fraser Forster] kind of taint the overall. It’s something that’s happened this year before. Obviously, it doesn’t help us in gaining traction in terms of our consistency, but in terms of the mentality of the boys, I love it.

Next up for Ange’s Spurs: Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur are back in action on Monday morning at 3.30am (AEDT) against Liverpool in the Premier League.

They’re at home to the Reds, who are currently two points clear on top of the table with a game in hand over all of their rivals.

Spurs are 10th, 13 points behind them - but only five points from the top four.

Here are the stats at full-time

That’s a controversial win...

They’ve just shown the replay of Son’s goal - the one that made it 4-2 - on BeIN Sports and it does look like there was a possible foul by Lucas Bergvall on the goalkeeper.

There was no VAR in action for this match - it comes into the Carabao Cup from the semis onwards - and I do wonder if there was, whether that goal would have been overturned.

Former United defender Mikael Silvestre is one of the pundits on the coverage I’m watching and he’s just said he thought it was a foul, although that the other defenders like Jonny Evans in the area should have taken better care of the situation.

FULL-TIME: Spurs 4-3 United

Lucas Bervgall has just conceded a free kick deep in Tottenham’s defensive half. Cops a yellow ticket… United are throwing everything forward… AND THERE IS THE WHISTLE!

Tottenham Hotspur are into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. They win 4-3 over Manchester United.

What an incredible game...

United score - it’s 4-3

Wow. This game’s not over yet!

Yves Bissouma has just conceded an own goal - or did it come off the head of Jonny Evans? Either way, United have scored from a corner kick at the other end - and there’s less than two minutes of stoppage time left!

It’s 4-3. They have a glimmer of hope!

This match is unbelievable

I can’t believe what we’ve witnessed here. On a number of levels. If you’re a goalkeeping purist you may have differing views.

Anyway, it looks like Spurs will be in the semis. They’re doing this the hard way. That is often the Postecoglou way.

He’s made a double sub, by the way - Solanke and Spence off, Sergio Reguilion and Brennan Johnson on.

We’re into the second minute of six minutes of added time.

NO WAY!!! SPURS SCORE A FOURTH!!

SON HEUNG-MIN JUST SCORED DIRECTLY FROM A CORNER KICK.

Yes, that’s correct.

What????????

What???????????

There’s no foul on the United goalkeeper but it is a weak effort by him. He’s mad about it, Bayindir, and remonstrates with the referee - he sees a yellow card. But the goal will stand.

It’s 4-2 with just a few minutes left!
