An AFL fan is facing a life ban and potential police action for assaulting a goal umpire during the Carlton v St Kilda match at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.
Steven Piperno, who had his back to supporters, was struck by a bottle which appeared to have been thrown from the stands.
The impact left a cut to the back of the head of the umpire. Piperno left the field and was replaced by a reserve.
The umpire was treated at the stadium for minor injuries and watched the rest of the match from the interchange bench.
Police at the ground were seen fanning out among the crowd as they spoke to nearby fans.
The person who threw the bottle reportedly left the ground soon after but police and security will use CCTV and broadcast vision to identify them.

The fan was sitting near the Carlton Cheer Squad but were not a member of that group.
The incident comes as Australian rules football and other sports continue to battle to retain and recruit umpires and referees.
Carlton coach Michael Voss was unequivocal post-game when asked about the incident.
“We don’t tolerate that — that’s not what footy is about,” Voss said.

“We spend a lot of time around trying to inspire and bring joy, and we want families at our football club and we want to create that safe environment.
“I reckon we do that really well and we will continue to reinforce that.
“When you hear about instances like that, I hope the AFL will follow it up strongly. I know our club will.”
Fox Footy commentators Garry Lyon and Jonathan Brown have called for the fan to face legal action along with a life ban from attending AFL games.

“Don’t stop there,” Lyon said.
“It’s borderline assault. That’s what it is. It drew blood.”
Brown said: “It’s absolutely assault. [Whoever it is] should be charged.”
Police have urged any fans who witnessed the goal umpire incident to reach out to them.
