Steven Toomey to replace Geraldine Knapp as The Gap councillor
By Cameron Atfield
Residents of The Gap will have soon have a new councillor after the LNP selected Steven Toomey to replace incumbent Geraldine Knapp in the ward.
Cr Knapp last month announced she would retire from the council ward she had represented since 1997.
Because her retirement was within 12 months of the next council election, the LNP was able to appoint its own candidate without the need for a byelection.
That meant soon-to-be Cr Toomey will go to the polls as The Gap's incumbent councillor.
Mr Toomey, a cost planner and estimator, was selected by local LNP branch members on Saturday.
He defeated fellow challengers Colin Fruk, a marketing manager, and the former Ashgove electorate officer for then-premier Campbell Newman, Tegan Welsh.
Comment has been sought from both Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and Mr Toomey, but his first public comments were expected to be made at a media event on Tuesday.
Cr Knapp will stand down from the council on June 25.
