Skilling Queensland jobs to go

A Queensland program which helps the disadvantaged find work will be cut and 140 public servants will lose their jobs.

Employment and Training Minister John-Paul Langbroek said the state government will axe the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program, saving $19 million a year.

He said although it was a tough decision, the program was a duplication of services provided by the federal government.

"Employment services are the responsibility of the federal government and given the diabolical economic damage caused by the Bligh Labor government, we need to end this type of needless duplication," he said in a statement.

All 144 full-time equivalent staff will be offered voluntary redundancies, vacant positions in the department, or will be put on the deployment list to be placed in other departments.

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk says the government wants to reduce unemployment to four per cent, but at the same time it is axing a program that gives disadvantaged jobseekers customised employment and training.

It's also breaking an election promise not to get rid of frontline services.

"These are essential frontline jobs and they are something that should remain," she said.
