Labor Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has backed Brisbane's cross-river rail project and pledged to work with new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to make it happen.
Appearing on the ABC's Q & A program, Mr Shorten said "I believe Brisbane should have cross river rail" and went on to name other public transport proposals around the nation that should receive federal government funding.
He said he was willing to work with new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to help the projects become a reality, while attacking former Prime Minister Tony Abbott for opposing funding for major public transport projects.
Announcing his new ministry on Sunday, Mr Turnbull said the federal government should not discriminate between modes of transport.
Queensland had the cross river rail project as number one on its wish list, which it has submitted to Infrastructure Australia.
On Mr Turnbull's ascension to the nation's top job, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk hoped the prime minister's known preference for taking public transport would translate in to funding for public transport projects.
