History in the making as first baby breastfed in Queensland Parliament
Labor MP Brittany Lauga has made political history, becoming the first woman to breastfeed her baby in Queensland Parliament.
Parliament resumed on Tuesday for the first sitting in three-and-a-half months, with members sworn-in after the election, including plenty of fresh faces.
Ms Lauga sat with three-and-a-half-month-old Odette on her lap during the sitting, strapping her into a baby carrier while being sworn-in.
Parliament staff had to squeeze in four extra chairs to the seating arrangement, with the number of electorates increased from 89 to 93.
With Labor increasing its numbers, member for Pine Rivers Nikki Boyd has been stuck over in 'enemy territory', sitting on the other side of the chamber with the LNP, just in front of the crossbenchers.
Before the election of the speaker, due to a lack of available chairs, Labor's Linus Power sat on a temporary stool, placed in the back row.
On the crossbench, from left to right, sat Katter's Australian Party MPs Nick Dametto, Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth, Greens MP Michael Berkman, One Nation's Stephen Andrew and independent Sandy Bolton.
As maverick MP Jo-Ann Miller walked to be sworn in, grinning from ear-to-ear, LNP politicians called out "go Jo!" and "We've got your back!"
Former LNP leader Tim Nicholls appeared to have grown fond of the beard he grew over the summer break, remaining hirsute.
LNP member for Surfers Paradise John-Paul Langbroek also received a loud cheer.
While the MPs were sworn in, politicians began to chat with each other, with some MPs, such as Mr Knuth, standing and shaking hands with people from other parties.
Former Greens co-deputy leader Larissa Waters made political history in the federal Senate in May last year, with her daughter becoming the first baby to be breastfed in that chamber.
