This California home has a library but it’s not for dusty old books

By Emily Power

There are markets within markets in real estate, even within the highest end.

And at a prestige level, what is one better than a wine cellar?

A wine library.

Welcome to 850 Sanitarium Road in Deer Park, California.

The Napa County estate, asking $US19.9 million ($A29.5 million), has a room dedicated to the delicate, Celsius-precise storage of 2000 bottles, with separate temperature-controlled zones for crisp whites and heroic reds.

The cellar is no dark, dank basement afterthought, as you’d expect in a home plonked in a world-famous wine region. Instead, it is bathed in light through full-height windows and doors, edged in steel.

The same minimalist, industrial theme flows through the three-bedroom house and manicured gardens.

Banks of glass - including a sensational walkway - capture panoramas of the handsome surrounding forest, from the home’s position between the valley floor and the Mayacamas Mountains.

Mother Nature is a beautiful backdrop but the landscapers lent their own special touches to the outdoor spaces, including a granite water feature with “million-year-old earth pearls″⁣.

The kitchen features a sculptural island bench, flowing like a luxuriously chewy cab sav into a Riedel glass.

Generous use of timber and concrete throughout, as well as a light hand with decor and flourishes, seems to blur the property into the mountainside.

The Napa Valley is a celebrity haunt, with a number of A-listers owning wineries.

Famous side-hustle vignerons include legendary movie director Francis Ford Coppola (Inglenook Winery) and singer/songwriter Boz Scaggs (Scaggs Winery).

As a holiday destination, it is hard to top - just ask the Kardashians, who frequent Napa’s Del Dotto Vineyards in St Helena, just south of Deer Park, and have given the family-owned, small-production business a huge PR boost.

Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty is looking after the sale campaign for 850 Sanitarium Road.
