The songs deemed too rude for Queensland in 1989

By Felicity Caldwell

The Fitzgerald inquiry delved deep into the seedy underbelly of police corruption and prostitution that permeated Queensland in the 1980s.

But what particularly worried some Queensland conservatives was the lewd songs the youths of 1989 were playing on their Walkmans.

Bands such as AC/DC, Guns N' Roses and the Beastie Boys drew the ire of two Nationals MPs during debate of the historic Fitzgerald report on July 7.

Member for Mount Gravatt Ian Henderson said the Fitzgerald report failed to deal with the issue of drugs and pornography.

"I seek leave to table a series of documents that are grossly obscene and indecent, yet are available today in Queensland," he said while tabling copies of lyrics of pop songs.

"I think that the children of Queensland are going to suffer infinitely more damage from reading this outrageously indecent material than from anything that has come out of the Fitzgerald inquiry.

"This is a greater danger and infinitely more threatening to the future welfare of this society."

Member for Warrego Howard Hobbs was similarly perturbed and complained Commissioner Tony Fitzgerald made scant reference to pornography in his report.

"I have here some documentation that is available through some music shops throughout this state," he said, tabling another list of song lyrics.

"They are examples of the types of things that Mr Fitzgerald should have been addressing.

"They are absolutely vulgar.

"They are all to do with prostitution and pornography."

The Queensland Parliament tabling office has delved into its archives to uncover which song lyrics were tabled.
