Man Tasered while trying to escape police custody after climbing into hospital ceiling

By Nigel Gladstone

A man who allegedly attempted to kill a 42-year-old in a “random” attack at a kebab shop in Sydney’s west was Tasered after attempting to escape police custody by climbing into a ceiling at Auburn Hospital.

The critically injured 42-year-old man was visiting a friend when he was reportedly stabbed at random in his head, neck and chest with a 25-centimetre knife that allegedly snapped during the attack at Dawson Mall in Mount Druitt about 8am on Friday. He was taken to Westmead Hospital where emergency surgery was successfully performed, leaving him in a stable condition.

Acting Superintendent Paul Tickner said it “seems that it was totally random and a vicious attack”.

Police in Mount Druitt were told the alleged attacker, a 38-year-old man, fled in a taxi on North Parade to a nearby McDonald’s restaurant on Jersey Road, Plumpton, where he went into the disabled bathroom and tried to stem the bleeding from his hand that was cut during the attack.

A witness speaking to Nine News said she saw “blood all over the floor”.

He was then taken to Auburn Hospital for precautionary reasons; however, while at the hospital, police allege he climbed into the ceiling, and officers used a Taser to take him back into custody.

The 38-year-old man was released from the hospital and taken to Mount Druitt police station, where he was charged with attempted murder, assault and attempting to escape police custody.

The man did not apply for bail, and it was formally refused. He is due to appear at Penrith local court on January 17, 2025.

Elsewhere in the state, another man was charged with murder after a woman’s body was found at a home north of Kempsey on Friday.

Police were called to a unit on Memorial Avenue, South West Rocks, 30 kilometres north of Kempsey, about 8am. They found the body of a 70-year-old woman and arrested a 59-year-old man – who police allege is known to the woman.

Detectives from the Mid North Coast have set up Strike Force Nundroo to investigate her death. The man did not apply for bail, and bail was refused at Port Macquarie local court.

He will face court again on Monday, November 11.
