Prime Minister thanks 'believers', pledges to 'keep the faith'

By Felicity Caldwell

The LNP's true believers have been urged to replicate the Coalition's unexpected win at the federal election at the next Queensland election.

Speaking at the LNP state convention on Saturday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison rallied the troops and thanked Queenslanders for "believing".

"I want to thank Queenslanders for believing in me, and I want to thank Queenslanders for believing in my team," he said.

"I want to thank Queenslanders for believing in the Liberals and the Nationals and the LNP.

"My government will keep the faith with those who believed, whether in Queensland or elsewhere around this country."

Mr Morrison paid tribute to Queensland voters for helping to deliver the Coalition back to government on May 18.

"Queensland didn't let us down - 58.4 per cent of the two-party preferred vote, the highest in Australia," he said.

"The swings across north Queensland were absolutely phenomenal."

Mr Morrison said he "can't recall a time in the parliamentary party when we have been such a united, such a strong and such a focused team".

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack echoed the Prime Minister's praise of Queensland on election night: "How good is team Queensland?"

"I have to say, thank you to each and every one of you individually, as a collective, for what you did to help us get home on May 18," Mr McCormack told party members.

"You helped us forge that wonderful, wonderful result, when so many right across the nation said we couldn't, said we shouldn't, and said we wouldn't, we did and we've got team Queensland to thank for that."

Mr McCormack rallied LNP members to continue the momentum from the federal election into the next Queensland state election, due in October 2020.

"There's a great opportunity, and there's a great challenge, we, you, us need to do it again for this fantastic person right here, [Queensland LNP leader] Deb Frecklington," he said.

"October 31, 2020 - sear it in your minds.

"That's going to also be a May 18-type day because we are going to bring the LNP home in Queensland and put it back into government where it should be."

Earlier, Ms Frecklington said the Queensland team was driven to "take back the state in 476 days time" but insisted her party was the underdog.

The LNP state convention continues.
