WA’s most sought-after uni degrees for 2024

By Holly Thompson

Thousands of people – from recent West Australian high school graduates, to mature-aged, interstate and international students – have applied to study at one of the state’s five universities.

Now, Tertiary Institutions Service Centre data has revealed which degrees were the most popular, with some receiving more than a thousand applications.

WAtoday has crunched to numbers to find out exactly which courses are leading the way at the metropolitan campuses.

Medicine was clearly the most popular choice, with the number of people applying at both Curtin University and the University of Western Australia sitting at 1695 and 1530 respectively.

But the course is incredibly selective, with roughly just over 4 per cent of applicants being selected during first round offers, released on December 21.

However, other health specialisations outside of medicine are also popular at the other three universities.

Physiotherapy, nursing, forensic science and paramedical science all make the cut, alongside veterinary science at Murdoch University – the only one in WA to offer this degree.

While engineering and commerce are also popular choices, no arts-based subjects make the top choices lists at any university.

However, outside the usual Bachelor’s degree, the university preparation courses were also hugely popular.

Across the three universities which offer this data for the December round of offers, 3486 students applied.

Overall, 10,356 hopeful students applied for Curtin across all campuses in the state – the most out of all the universities, followed closely by UWA with 7176 applicants.

Edith Cowan University received 4195, Murdoch received 3919 and Notre Dame received 2086.
