WA’s most popular baby names for 2024 revealed

By Hamish Hastie

The tried and tested favourite baby names for new West Australian parents continue to be the most popular in the state with Oliver, Noah, Isla and Charlotte all topping the list in 2024.

Oliver and Isla have been the most popular baby names in the state for years but this year is the first since 2018 that the top name was tied.

Both Oliver and Noah recorded 195 name registrations each in 2024 while Isla and Charlotte recorded 136 each.

It was a huge leap for Charlotte, which was fourth on the 2023 list and a three-way tie for girls’ names was narrowly avoided with Amelia falling just one registration short of the joint number one position.

Births Deaths and Marriages saw 30,825 births registered in WA in 2024.

Registrar Alison Jackson said there was a lot of interest in popular baby names every year.

“This year saw the introduction of online birth registrations, an option parents have taken up in droves.” Ms Jackson said.

“The Registry has received more than 14,500 digital birth registration applications since launching the online portal in May,” she said.

“Data now indicates close to 90 per cent of parents are choosing the online option, instead of posting or lodging paper birth registration forms at the registry.”

Jackson said regional parents sometimes defied statewide trends, with a different set of names occupying some top spots.

“For instance, in the Goldfields-Esperance region, Ethan and Harper were number one, Mia was most popular girls name in the South West/Great Southern and Levi topped boys’ names in Peel,” she said.
