Stay safe in Kwinana. Good night

It is time to close the blog for the day, and we thank you for joining us.

Our thoughts are with people near the emergency bushfire in the City of Kwinana, which started just before 4pm.

Please stay up-to-date on the fire that is burning out of control via www.emergency.wa.gov.au.

Bushfire emergency in City of Kwinana

A Bushfire Emergency Warning is in place for people in an area bounded by Treeby Road, Battersby Road, Marri Park Drive, Park Way, Orton Road and Bombay Boulevard in parts of Casuarina and Anketell.

You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes.

If the way is clear, leave in a northerly direction towards Anketell Road.

Firefighters are actively fighting the fire and aerial support has been sent to assist ground crews.

The fire was reported at 3.49pm.

WHAT TO DO

  • If the way is clear, leave now for a safer place. This may be with family or friends away from the area.

  • Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger.

  • Take your emergency kit with you.

  • If you become stuck in your car, park away from bushes, cover yourself with a woollen blanket, get onto the floor as the windows may break from the intense heat.

  • Close all doors and windows and turn off evaporative air conditioners but keep water running through the system if possible.

  • If you cannot leave, you need to get ready to shelter in your home.

  • You must shelter before the fire arrives, as the extreme heat will kill you before the flames reach you.

  • Go to a room in your home where you can shelter from the approaching fire.

  • The room should have running water, such as a kitchen or laundry, and have a clear exit so you can easily escape.

  • If you are not at home, it is too dangerous to return.

Andre Rebelo found guilty of murdering his mother

By Rebecca Peppiatt

A Supreme Court jury has just returned a verdict of guilty in the sensational murder trial of Andre Rebelo.

Rebelo has spent nearly eight weeks on trial over accusations that he killed his mum, 58-year-old Colleen Rebelo and then covered it up by placing her body in a shower to make it look like she had collapsed from natural causes.

Today that accusation became truth as a jury of 12 returned a guilty verdict.

The trial has gripped the nation as prosecutors told the jury Rebelo had clear motive for wanting his mum dead after taking out three life insurance policies worth over a million dollars in her name.

A Coroner failed to find a cause of death so all of the evidence presented to the jury was circumstantial.

A series of missed calls and angry text messages from his then-girlfriend – Instagram model Grace Piscopo – were shown to the jury as evidence that Rebelo was unavailable during a 45-minute window on May 25, 2020, the day Colleen Rebelo died.

While the gloriously dingy Gov’s Sports Bar is no more, the government is trumpeting new food and beverage options as part of the revamp, which has come online alongside new tourism experiences and the return of the late-night ferry service.

New experiences include:

  • Full-day guided cycling tours;
  • traditional sailing adventures aboard one the country’s last operating pearl luggers;
  • beachside wellness, including yoga and mindfulness sessions;
  • digital hiking tours through the Wadjemup Bidi trails;
  • handcrafted ice-cream pop-up with an exclusive Rottnest-inspired flavour.

The island’s units at Geordie Bay have also been upgraded with modernised kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor amenities, and upgrades to the Main Jetty have also been finalised.

WA Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti said the summer promised to be an exciting time on Rottnest.

“The diverse range of new activities demonstrates our commitment to expanding the island’s offerings to enhance the visitor experience,” she said.

A house built in 16 weeks for less than $250,000? So what’s the catch?

By Sarah Brookes

Is this the housing solution Perth needs now?

Myaree-based Summit Homes is expanding its quick-build tiny homes range to larger modular homes.

Summit Modular general manager Brad Bairstow said the tiny homes launched 12 months ago to strong market interest, and hundreds of customers had the same request – could they have one, but bigger?

Bairstow said Summit’s four new home designs were priced from $247,500, excluding carport, plus transport and site works. Delivery was promised within just 16 weeks.

“During a housing crisis, we need to deliver homes faster and cheaper, and using innovative building methodologies,” he said.

The homes are built in sections off site at the company’s Canning Vale facility, which is not disrupted by weather conditions, site access and trade availability, which offers faster construction times.

‘Our hearts go out to Donna and her family today’: Cook

WA Premier Roger Cook has commented on the guilty verdict handed down to Perth grandmother Donna Nelson, who has been convicted of drug smuggling in Japan.

Asked about the case on Thursday morning, Cook said the verdict must have come as a “huge kick in the guts” to Nelson and her family.

The premier said he met with the Australian ambassador to Japan during a trade mission last year, who detailed the “very extensive” contact the federal government had with Nelson.

“But it is Japan’s judicial system, and we have to respect that, but I’m sure the federal government doing everything they can to support Donna and her family,” Cook said.

Asked whether Nelson, having allegedly been tricked into smuggling the drugs as part of a love scam, deserved more diplomatic help than other Australians locked up abroad such as the Bali Nine, Cook said there were avenues of appeal open to the grandmother.

“And in due course, I hope we may see a situation where Donna Nelson is brought home sooner rather than later,” he said.
