WA Premier Roger Cook has commented on the guilty verdict handed down to Perth grandmother Donna Nelson, who has been convicted of drug smuggling in Japan.
Asked about the case on Thursday morning, Cook said the verdict must have come as a “huge kick in the guts” to Nelson and her family.

The premier said he met with the Australian ambassador to Japan during a trade mission last year, who detailed the “very extensive” contact the federal government had with Nelson.
“But it is Japan’s judicial system, and we have to respect that, but I’m sure the federal government doing everything they can to support Donna and her family,” Cook said.
Asked whether Nelson, having allegedly been tricked into smuggling the drugs as part of a love scam, deserved more diplomatic help than other Australians locked up abroad such as the Bali Nine, Cook said there were avenues of appeal open to the grandmother.
“And in due course, I hope we may see a situation where Donna Nelson is brought home sooner rather than later,” he said.
