Two women die in separate WA crashes, Perth man charged after police pursuit
Two women have died in separate crashes on West Australian roads, while a Beckenham man has been charged following a dramatic police chase after being found with stolen numberplates.
WA Police’s Major Crash Investigation Section is investigating a fatal crash in Perth’s east on Saturday, where a silver Hyundai i30 and a white Mitsubishi Challenger collided at the intersection of Harris Road and Oats Street in Carlisle about 11.25am.
“The 77-year-old female driver of the Hyundai sustained critical injuries and was conveyed to Royal Perth Hospital where she later died,” police said in a statement.
“The 26-year-old male driver of the Mitsubishi was not injured.”
In another incident in Norseman, 724 kilometres east of Perth, a road train carrying three trailers and a pedestrian were involved in a fatal collision on Prinsep Street about 11:15am on Saturday.
The 40-year-old female pedestrian sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.
Major Crash investigators are conducting examinations of both crash scenes and are appealing for any witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report the information online.
Meanwhile, police have charged a 28-year-old Beckenham man after a tense pursuit through several suburbs on Saturday.
“It will be alleged that at 10.20am, police attempted to stop the driver of a white Toyota Prado with stolen plates travelling eastbound on Leach Highway in Shelley,” police said.
“The vehicle failed to stop for police and travelled through several southern and eastern suburbs, frequently driving at excessive speeds and in a dangerous manner. Police made numerous attempts to stop the vehicle, however were unable to do so in a safe manner.
“Just after 2pm, the male driver stopped the vehicle outside a residence in Beckenham, and was seen to run into the yard. Police were then able to apprehend the man without incident.”
The driver has been charged with:
- Driver of a vehicle failing to comply with a direction to stop (aggravation)
- Reckless driving to escape pursuit by police
- No authority to drive
- Drove, caused or permitted a vehicle with a forged, replica or false plate to be driven on a road
- Failing to obey an order given by an officer
- Possession or stolen unlawfully obtaining property
He was due to appear before Northbridge Magistrates Court on Sunday.
