Stuck for NYE plans? Elizabeth Quay is the place to be

By Rebecca Peppiatt

Expect to hear plenty of noise this New Year’s Eve across Perth with 10 separate fireworks shows in the metro area plus another four included in the state’s schedule of fireworks events as far away as the Cocos Islands.

In Perth this includes NYE events at Mindarie Marina, Raffles Hotel, Rottnest Island, East Perth for the Seasons NYE festival, Gloucester Park, Claremont for the Snack NYE festival, City of Mandurah, City of Rockingham and of course the City of Perth’s NYE event.

Regionally there will be fireworks events in Busselton, on the West Island in the Cocos Islands, Northcliffe and at Hanover Bay in Albany.

The family-friendly fireworks display over the Swan River on New Year’s Eve is a city first and will be followed by a midnight display.

City of Perth will be helping locals see in 2025 with a midnight display at Elizabeth Quay as well as amusement rides, sideshow alley, food vendors and roving entertainment.

WA Police have issued a stark warning to revellers across the state about behaviour throughout the evening, stating that officers will be patrolling beaches, waterways, parks and “anywhere where people are going to congregate”.

Other New Year’s Eve entertainment

  • ROTTNEST ISLAND: Fireworks over Thomson Bay at 8pm. Registration is required. www.rottnestisland.com
  • MANDURAH: Fireworks on the Western Foreshore at 9pm and midnight, with family-friendly activities and food trucks from 6pm onwards.
  • ROCKINGHAM: Fireworks at 9pm and midnight on Rockingham Foreshore, with The Cat Empire performing in between.

“And I promise you, if you are inclined to misbehave, if you are going to start trouble, police will be there, and you will be subject to police intervention,” Commander Quentin Flatman said.

He added that cops will be utilising new knife wand legislation, conducting searches of people within the entertainment precinct.

“I can tell you now, if you’re going to be bringing an edged weapon or a knife into anywhere where people are going to be congregating, you will be caught and you will be charged,” Flatman said.

“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated, which is why we have this new legislation introduced, and I promise you it will destroy your night once you are arrested after this event.”

Police will also be targeting road users after a horror end to 2024 with four fatalities in just 12 hours on Monday.

“I remind you that every police car is a booze bus,” Flatman said.

“If you drink drive or use drugs when you are driving, you will get caught.

“Any loss of life on our roads in this state is unacceptable, and I implore you and ask you to make sure you look after yourselves, your passengers and other road users.

“I also remind you that double the merits remain in place. So if you are undertaking poor behaviour on our roads, you will be caught.”
