A 27-year-old aged care worker who describes himself as a “secret homosexual” has been sentenced to two years in prison after being caught on camera forcing a vulnerable Parkinsons and dementia sufferer to touch him indecently.
James Ng’Ang’A Irungu, who moved to Australia from Kenya where he was a mechanical engineer, was arrested and charged with three counts of indecently dealing with an incapable person last March.
Irungu was employed as an aged care worker at The Queenslea in Claremont and was assigned to care for an 83-year-old with significant assistance needs.
The man’s daughter had CCTV motion-sensor cameras installed in his home, Perth’s District Court heard on Thursday, and when she reviewed the footage, she witnessed her father being forced to perform a sex act multiple times.
Irungu was arrested and gave no explanation to police for his offending, except claiming he had “repressed” his sexuality and at the time was struggling to pay for his post-graduate qualification in mechanical engineering at Edith Cowan University.
The court heard Irungu’s offending had caused the victim “tremendous shame” and that the man’s health deteriorated after the incident. He passed away last month.
“He exploited … vulnerabilities for his own gratification,” state prosecutors told the court.
Irungu was sentenced to 24 months in prison, backdated to March 23 last year when he was first held in custody.
Judge Alan Sefton said it was likely he would be deported to Kenya upon his release.
