Teens showed friend ‘bloody knife’ after Doncaster doctor’s death

By David Estcourt

Two teenagers charged with the stabbing murder of Doncaster doctor Ash Gordon allegedly showed a bloody knife to a friend.

The pair have had their case fast-tracked to the Supreme Court after pleading not guilty over the home invasion death of the 33-year-old in January.

During a brief hearing in a children’s court on Thursday, prosecutors detailed the role of a third child who has admitted entering Gordon’s home but was not there when he was stabbed.

Prosecutor Peter Pickering had been granted the right to compulsorily examine the boy.

The court heard that the two accused teenagers showed a bloody knife to a friend in the aftermath of the alleged attack.

“After, when the two offenders allegedly came back to the house ... they allegedly showed him the weapon, the bloody knife,” Pickering said.

The court also heard that one of the children had provided police with a multipage statement which details the incident.

The court heard legal argument about whether the compulsory examination could go ahead if the case was being moved up to the Supreme Court. Pickering ultimately withdrew the application.

Documents previously released by the court allege that on January 13, the two boys stole a pair of white size 10 Nike Air Force sneakers, a pair of black Astro headphones, a gaming computer, a gaming laptop, a blue Louis Vutton wallet and a digital key to a Mitsubishi Triton that belonged to Gordon.

The documents allege the boys trespassed into the building where Gordon lived.

Gordon was found severely injured in Eildon Street at 5.30am, less than a kilometre from his home, and died at the scene.

Police allege he was involved in a confrontation in which he was fatally injured. The two teenagers have been charged with murder, aggravated burglary and theft.

The judge on Thursday asked the two 16-year-olds for their pleas, to which the boys both replied “not guilty”.

“In respect of certain charges that are before the court, both of you are committed to stand trial for a directions hearing to be heard at the Supreme Court of Victoria,” he told the pair.

Gordon, a GP and the founder of Redefine Aesthetics in Richmond, was remembered by his family at the time of the tragedy as a respected doctor with a heart of gold. They have since become campaigners for tougher police powers to tackle youth offenders.

The matter will go to the Supreme Court on June 14.
