Two police officers have been injured during an arrest in Ipswich involving a man armed with a knife and a woman wanted for multiple offences, police allege.

A police helicopter had been following a car across south Brisbane suburbs before tyre-deflation devices were used to stop the vehicle at the intersection of Boundary Road and Antimony Street in Carole Park just after 1am on Sunday.

When police approached the car, a passenger allegedly emerged with a knife and slashed a senior constable across the arm, causing a serious injury.

The officer was given first aid by his colleagues.

During the arrest of three people from the car, a second officer’s finger was cut. Both officers were taken to hospital.

A 37-year-old Cherbourg man was charged with acts intended to resist lawful arrest.

The driver of the car, a 25-year-old Goodna woman, was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evading police, five counts of stealing, and four counts of unlicensed driving.

Both are scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

The third person was released without charge.

Deputy Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon said the officer’s arm would require surgery.

“Our officers are on the front line and do a dangerous job every single day, and these are the sort of risks we face in terms of people carrying knives,” she said.

“But that’s part of the challenge we face in being able to respond to those things very quickly.

“We wish that officer a full and speedy recovery, but I’m very, very pleased the offenders have been taken into custody.”
