Two Brisbane City councillors set to retire
Two or Brisbane’s longest-serving councillors are set to retire at the next Brisbane City Council election.
It is understood Ian McKenzie for Coorparoo and Norm Wyndham for McDowall will retire from their positions before the 2020 election.
Councillor Julian Simmonds will also not contest Walter-Taylor ward after he won preselection for the federal seat of Ryan in May.
Cr Simmonds was elected in 2010. A date for the pre-selection has not been set.
It is understood it was originally scheduled to open in September or October but has now been pushed back until early 2019.
Cr McKenzie has discussed his plan to retire within the LNP, but told Fairfax Media he had not made any decisions yet.
"I'm still considering my future - there's 18 months left in this term and much more to do locally," he said.
"I'll make an announcement when I've made a decision."
It is understood the LNP has about seven candidates, across the three wards, interested in running.
Several of the candidates are women who will look to replace the three retiring male councillors.
At the last council election, in March 2016, Cr Wyndham won 61 per cent of the vote, Cr Simmonds 60.4 per cent and Cr McKenzie secured 46.5 per cent.
At the last election, Cr Wyndham and Cr McKenzie survived LNP preselection challenges after their wards changed due to redistributions.
The next council election is in March, 2020.
Labor announced its lord mayoral candidate, Rod Harding, on September 12 and current lord mayor Graham Quirk announced he would nominate to run in 2020 in May.
Cr Wyndham and Cr Simmonds did not respond to requests for comment.
