Police hunt for driver after crash kills Uber passenger in Brisbane’s south-west
By Cloe Read
A manhunt continues for the driver of a Ford Mondeo that ploughed into an Uber vehicle, killing a passenger and injuring another.
As of Wednesday afternoon, police had not tracked down the driver of the Mondeo that crashed into the Uber vehicle at the intersection of Boundary and Progress roads in Wacol.
Ryan Grafton, 30, who was a passenger in the Uber, died at the scene of the crash in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
His fellow passenger Amelia Vinden, 26, was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition with chest and abdominal pain.
The 42-year-old Uber driver Hussein Ali Mohamed was taken to the same hospital with suspected back injuries.
Grafton’s sister Lauren Bennett remembered her brother as a “kind uncle”.
“He was a kind, big-hearted person, who loved his family,” she told Nine News.
The Ford Mondeo collided with the Uber vehicle - a Toyota Camry - about 2.15am, closing Boundary Road for several hours and causing heavy traffic in the area near the Centenary Highway.
The driver of the Mondeo fled the scene.
“That is a horrendous incident that occurred in the early hours of this morning ... tragically, a person has lost their life,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Andrew Massingham told 4BC Radio on Tuesday afternoon.
“Police, at this point in time, have information in relation to an [alleged] adult offender that we believe is responsible, and that manhunt is continuing tonight in the southern suburbs.”
Police have asked anyone with dashcam footage, or other relevant information, to contact them.
