Man behind bars after homemade shotgun shooting arrest

A man accused of shooting a property owner with a homemade shotgun when he was confronted under a house will remain behind bars after his arrest in bushland.

Jason Ian Beath, 57, was not required to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday following his arrest at Tallebudgera Valley, south-west of the Gold Coast, about 10.15am on Sunday.

Beath was charged with attempt to murder as well as trespass, possessing ammunition and possession of a shotgun used to commit an indictable offence.

Police launched a manhunt after Beath allegedly opened fire with the shotgun on a 59-year-old man at a Tallebudgera Valley property on February 6.

The man had heard noises underneath his house and found Beath at the scene, police alleged.

“The [alleged] victim approached a man after finding him on his property, the man then presented a firearm and shot the [alleged] victim,” a police statement said.

“The [alleged offender] has then left the scene by foot in an unknown direction.”

Emergency crews attended the house and the shot 59-year-old was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Beath was arrested by officers searching on foot on Sunday near the scene.

“During this search, a 57-year-old man was located injured in a structure in bushland and taken into custody without incident,” police said.

“The man has been transported to hospital to be assessed for non-life-threatening injuries.”

In Southport Magistrates Court on Monday, Beath’s solicitor Bettina Webb asked for a date for police to provide their brief of evidence in the case.

“[Beath] is in the watch house ... there is no application for bail,” she said.

Webb sought to have the case return to court as soon as Tuesday.

Police prosecutor Rodney Keyte said he had no issue with the application.

Magistrate Pamela Dowse said the suggested dates were “really horrible” due to the number of cases in court.

Dowse adjourned the matter for February 25 and Keyte said he would start work on a brief of evidence.
