‘How do I report a grub for dropping a banana peel on a seat?’
By Cloe Read
Queensland Rail received more than 800 complaints last year about etiquette on trains, including one passenger dropping a banana peel on a seat, and others playing music, vaping or painting their nails.
More than 200 complaints by commuters related to alcohol, drugs or smoking, while 191 complained about noise in the quiet carriage, QR said.
Feet and bags on seats was the third-highest complaint, with 68 reporting they, or others, were unable to get a seat on their journey.
This was followed by more than 40 complaints about people playing music or using their devices loudly.
Queensland Rail spokeswoman Tessa Hardy said dozens of commuters had messaged to complain on social media.
Examples of the feedback included: “Good morning QR, disappointing that at 5am no seats are available. All the bags are well seated!” and “There are four people vaping like no tomorrow in here and it’s very strong.”
Hardy urged train travellers to be mindful of fellow customers while commuting and at stations.
“One of the more obscure complaints was a customer witnessing young people throwing cookie dough at one another on the train, and in the past, we’ve even seen reports of someone painting their nails,” she said.
“We all lead chaotic lives, but the feedback also reinforced the fact that our customers cherish peaceful reflection time in the designated quiet carriages.”
Hardy said QR had received multiple complaints about smoking or vaping on trains or in stations, reminding commuters there were $309 fines in place for those caught breaking the rules.
She also reminded commuters not to consume food or drink on board, and to give up their seats for pregnant women, seniors, people with a disability or people with an injury.
