Grenades handed over at Gold Coast force streets into lockdown
A man surrendering three grenades and three semi-automatic rifles prompted an emergency declaration, shutting streets down on the Gold Coast.
The declaration, under the Public Safety Preservation Act, was made about 8.45am on Wednesday at Southport, with boundaries encompassing Bay Street between Davenport Street and Rawlins Street.
Police were called to Bay Street about 8.20am after the weapons were surrendered to a lawyer’s office.
No threats had been made however police were investigating why the weapons were surrendered to a lawyer’s office and not a police station.
The emergency declaration was revoked about 11.40am once the area was deemed safe.
