Family of woman ‘gunned down’ in Caboolture share grief of losing sister days before Christmas

Less than 48 hours after Chloe Jade Mason was allegedly chased down by two men, assaulted and shot dead, her heartbroken family have spoken out.

Twenty-three-year-old Mason, also known as Ceejay, was found suffering from gunshot wounds on Railway Parade in Caboolture, north of Brisbane, in the early hours of Sunday morning, and declared dead at the scene.

In an exclusive interview with Nine News, sister Dani Mason said she had no idea why Chloe was targeted.

“She was the most amazing person you could ever meet,” she said.

“She’s someone you would have wanted to have by your side, as a person, a sister, an aunty, a friend. She would have made an amazing mother.

“She’s just an all-round amazing human. She did not deserve what happened to her. Nobody deserves that.”

The family say they had been looking forward to Christmas with Chloe, with wrapped presents waiting for her under the tree.

Her brother, Jacob, remembered her as a “gun” rugby player.

“She was the top of her team in rugby. Everyone looked up to her,” he said. “She’d go out of her way to make sure everyone was OK.”

Chloe had seven siblings. Sister Hannah Mckone described the 23-year-old as a “brave girl”.

“Being so close to Christmas, it’s hard to lose your sister, your little baby sister, in such an unimaginable way as well,” she said.

“She never got to become a mother. We never got to go on a holiday as adult women and enjoy these things that you do with your sister.

“The last thing I’m ever going to be able to give her is a nice send-off.”

Police have established Operation Whiskey Cortland, with local and specialist homicide detectives searching for the two men.

Chloe’s family have launched an online fundraiser to cover the costs of the funeral.

“Christmas is a week away – we don’t exactly have a few grand in the bank to bury a loved one,” Dani Mason said.

Police and the grieving family have asked members of the public to come forward with information.

“How does one get shot down in the street and nobody sees it and nobody says anything in the middle of the street?” Dani Mason added.

“It doesn’t make sense to me.”

Anyone with dashcam or footage from around 11.40pm on Saturday night at Railway Parade, Caboolture, has been asked to contact police.
