That's a wrap for today's Brisbane Times coronavirus blog. We'll be back to bring you the latest developments tomorrow.
Here's a recap of what happened today:
- Australia's death toll reached a sad milestone with the death of Alice Bacon in Sydney's Newmarch House nursing home. Her death was Australia's 100th confirmed pandemic-related casualty.
- There are now 12 active cases, 1039 recovered and six deaths for a total of 1057 Queensland cases.
- Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is standing firm on her tough closed border policy, despite mounting pressure from interstate.
- The Premier also announced a $500 million stimulus package to reboot the economy through road upgrades, local government projects and small business grants.
- The war of words between Australia and China has turned nasty, with an 80 per cent tariff announced for Australian barley entering the Chinese market.
- Some potentially good news from the United States, where biotech company Moderna announced a successful early - and small - trial of a COVID-19 vaccine. But don't get the champagne out yet - this is just the first of many steps before it can be widely distributed.
- Some slightly bizarre news from the United States, where President Donald Trump announced he had been taking antimalarial drug hydroxychoroquine "for about a week and a half now", despite its potential to cause significant side effects and warnings from health professionals that its effectiveness as a COVID-19 prophylactic was hypothetical at best.
