Three people have been injured after a police car was hit from behind by a ute on the M1 motorway in Gold Coast’s north.
Queensland Police said the marked car was stopped on the side of the motorway performing traffic duties when it was hit by a Mitsubishi Triton ute at Helensvale about 1.20pm today.
A male police officer, a woman and a two-year-old boy are all in hospital in a serious condition.
“The 55-year-old male police officer, the 54-year-old female driver and a two-year-old passenger of the Mitsubishi were transported to hospital with serious injuries,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
“The driver of the third vehicle, who had stopped to offer assistance, was not injured.”
Police and ambulance were on scene following the Gold Coast crash in the southbound lane on the motorway, south of exit 62.
Queensland Ambulance said in addition to the injuries, there were major traffic delays.
“Multiple paramedic crews, including critical care and the high-acuity response unit attended a two-vehicle crash on the Pacific Motorway southbound at 1.20pm,” QAS wrote on social media.
“Traffic is heavily affected. Motorists are urged to seek alternate routes.”
