Brisbane family safe after car through roof

By Cameron Atfield

Brent Gamble had just called it a night when a car smashed through the roof of his family home and came to rest at the end of his bed, catching him in its headlights.

Mr Gamble, 32, and his family were lucky to escape injury when the car, which was travelling along Buckland Road at Everton Hills, careered through a fence and down through the roof of the Bridges Court house below.

"I was in bed and my wife was asleep beside me," he said.

"I heard the car coming because he was peak-revving down the road and then there was a bit of a silence and then, bang, in he came.

"So I went from a lying down position to a standing position within milliseconds, I think."

Mr Gamble's first thought was the safety of his two sons, one aged seven and the other nine months.

"It was pretty scary, but it was more about just getting the kids out first," he said.

Mr Gamble said he got straight up to check on his sons, while the driver tried to leave the scene.

"I was yelling at him, because I knew it was a car, 'Is everyone all right? Is everyone all right?' but he was climbing out of the passenger side window and up to the roof," he said.

"He got out and he ran down the street – he did a runner."

It is understood a neighbour stopped the man from leaving the scene before police arrived.

Mr Gamble said the driver appeared to be "blind" drunk, but a police spokesman said no charges had yet been laid.

The car remained in the house on Saturday morning, while the logistics of its removal were being worked out.

It is understood that the Melbourne-based owners of the house will have to foot the bill for the car's removal up front, as drivers' insurance may not cover cases of drink-driving.

The driver of the vehicle, a 19-year-old Alderley man, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Police said investigations were continuing.
