Brisbane council bus driver to go to trial over Tia Cameron’s death

By Cloe Read

A Brisbane City Council bus driver charged over the death of 18-year-old Tia Cameron in the CBD will fight the case at trial.

Lindsay Francis Selby, 71, was charged with driving without due care and attention causing death, after the bus he was driving mounted the footpath on Edward Street on March 8, 2024, pinning Cameron against the wall of the Anzac Square Arcade building.

Cameron, an 18-year-old administration worker, had left a lash appointment moments before she was hit.

At a hearing for the case in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning, Selby’s lawyer, Claire McGee, told the court the case would proceed to trial.

Cameron’s family was emotional as McGee spoke, with some of her loved ones beginning to cry from the public gallery. The family has attended each court hearing.

McGee said barrister Saul Holt KC had been briefed on the matter.

“We don’t have a full brief yet ... we have some material, the arresting officer’s statement, the report,” she told the court.

“I don’t expect there will be much more, but if there is to be, directions should be made for that to be disclosed.”

Magistrate Peter Saggers adjourned the case for trial review in early September. The trial was scheduled for a full day on September 23.

Last month, the court heard the bus that struck and killed Cameron was back in operation.

The court previously heard Selby’s legal team had difficulty with the case given the defence now no longer had possession of the bus, and it had been unable to be inspected before receiving Holt’s advice on whether to go to trial.

Selby remains on bail.
