Sergeant Ian Douglas, the police communications officer co-ordinating the pursuit of Ricky Maddison, says the wanted man clapped out the window of his brother’s ute during the police chase.
“At one point, he had a little clap out the window at police,” he tells the inquest during the closing stages of his testimony.
Sergeant Douglas is also pressed further on his decision to allow the chase to continue. He says he was waiting for Maddison to do something dangerous, but it simply did not happen.
“There were no indicators to stop the pursuit … it was just a ‘fail to stop’ basically,” he says.
“The imminent need to apprehend him was there and the dangerous driving was not.”
At one point during the chase, there was a discussion between Sergeant Douglas and a pursuing crew about Maddison’s driving, to which the response was: “He’s still doing 60km/h, he just hasn’t pulled over.”
Sergeant Douglas is excused and was the final witness for today, so the inquest adjourns.
Watch out for the wrap of today’s testimonies.
