Accused border runner allegedly crossed into Queensland, stole several cars
A man accused of illegally crossing the border into Queensland, stealing several cars and dangerous driving has fronted a Brisbane court on 11 charges.
Callum James Hedlefs, 30, appeared in Brisbane Arrests Court via video-link on Monday morning.
Mr Hedlefs is charged with three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one count each of bringing stolen goods into Queensland, failing to comply with COVID-19 directions, fraud, wilful damage, interfering with a fire apparatus, burglary, stealing and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
The allegations include that Mr Hedlefs drove a car he stole from Ballina in northern NSW across the border at Dalcouth, 165 kilometres south-west of Brisbane, on January 29 without a border pass.
On the same day, he also allegedly drove away from a Liberty service station in nearby Glen Aplin without paying for fuel, before taking another car from a Stanthorpe address that day.
Mr Hedlefs is also accused of breaking in and stealing car keys from a home in Samford, north-west of Brisbane, on Sunday before taking the victim’s car. He is further charged with dangerous driving on the same day.
On September 22, a picture was posted to his Instagram account of a beach with the caption:
“Yeah everyone, let’s stay inside coz flu is around. Beach looks s--- anyway ... not. Pfft. F--- that lockdown is a fowl joke #staycooked.”
Mr Hedlefs did not apply for bail when his case was briefly mentioned on Monday.
He was represented by Legal Aid, but he planned to seek representation from Fisher Dore Lawyers.
The case will next be heard in Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 8, where Mr Hedlefs will appear via video-link from prison.
