A man has been arrested after the body of a woman, believed to have been his mother, was found in a car boot in a small Northern Rivers town.
Police were responding to a concern for welfare call at a unit on Park Street in Evans Head, south of Ballina, when they made the grim discovery about 8am on Friday.
The 60-year-old woman had suffered significant injuries.
The 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Ballina police station.
He was charged late on Friday afternoon with murder and improperly interfering with a corpse.
He was refused bail and is due to appear in Lismore Local Court on Saturday.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the woman’s death is ongoing.
