Two bodies found in submerged car at Port Stephens boat ramp

By Fergus Hunter

Police have found two bodies in a submerged car at a boat ramp in Port Stephens.

The bodies were recovered after emergency services were called to the Soldiers Point boat ramp around 4.30am on Sunday, alerted to a vehicle being in the water.

Police attended and found a white hatchback fully submerged. One deceased person was located initially and a crime scene was established.

As the vehicle was being recovered, two bodies – a man and a woman – were found inside. They are yet to be formally identified.

Local police were assisted by specialist officers, including divers, and SES volunteers.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and how the car came to be in the water.

The boat ramp was closed on Sunday and remained off limits around 5pm.

The Soldiers Point facility is a busy boat launching point on the western end of Port Stephens, about 10 minutes’ drive from Nelson Bay an hour north of Newcastle.
