By Jessica McSweeney

A dealer at The Star casino has been charged with rigging roulette games with an accomplice to pocket more than $25,000.

NSW Police under Strike Force Antree, which was established to investigate corrupt conduct at Sydney’s casinos, became aware that a dealer at The Star was working with another man to rig the roulette games between September and October last year.

An employee was charged with his involvement in a roulette scam.

An employee was charged with his involvement in a roulette scam.

Police allege that a 23-year-old man who worked at the casino as a dealer, and another 22-year-old man, would move bets after the roulette result had occurred.

Police believe the men did this multiple times.

The two men were issued future court attendance notices and charged with facilitating conduct that corrupts the betting outcome of an event, and obtaining benefit in a casino by dishonest means.

They will face Downing Centre Local Court on November 1.

It’s not the first time police have uncovered alleged illegal betting activity at The Star. In an unrelated case in 2020, two men, including one employee, were charged over their involvement in a betting scam.

Police alleged that the employee communicated with another man during a game of baccarat, allowing the men to win unfairly.

The scam allegedly reaped the two men thousands of dollars and casino chips worth nearly $170,000.

The Star was slated to post its financial results last month but instead entered a trading halt after a report into the culture at the Star Entertainment Group found the company unsuitable to hold a casino license.

Adam Bell, SC, was commissioned by the NSW casino regulator to launch a second probe into The Star after concerns it had not adequately addressed cultural issues after it was exposed for anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism failings in 2021.
